ADF: automatic document feeder
Auto-dialing: enables user to store preprogrammed telephone numbers in a fax machine’s memory.
Cartridge: holds the film, ink, or toner in a fax machine
Confirmation Report: report printed after a fax transmission, stating the time and result of the transmission
Developer: substance that carries toner and makes it ready to be applied to the photoconductor drum during a
fax machine’s printing process
Document feeder: mechanism that feeds multiple pages in succession through a fax machine during the
transmit process
Donor Film: roll of carbon film used in the printing process of some fax machines
DPI: dots-per-inch
Drum: the cylinder inside a fax machine on which the print image is formed
Fax Film: “see donor film”
Facsimile: a method of transmitting and receiving information in hard-copy form over telephone lines
Imaging Drum: “see drum”
Imaging Film: “see donor film”
Journal: a list of all transmissions and receptions (usually, the last 50-100) that have occurred using the fax
machine
Modem: a device found in all fax equipment that allows a signal to be transmitted over telephone lines
One-touch dialing: a single button on a fax machine used to dial a preprogrammed telephone number
Paper Cassette: area in a fax machine where blank paper is stored and is available to print to
Paper Tray: “see paper cassette”
Photo Conductor: “see drum”
Speed-dialing: “see auto-dialing”
TCR: transmit confirmation report (see confirmation report)
Thermal paper: chemically treated roll of paper used in thermal fax machines
Toner Cartridge: cartridge containing the toner in a fax machine
TTI: transmit terminal identifier (information imprinted at the top of a received fax giving information about the
sender)
Toner: plastic-carbon based substance that forms the image on the paper during some fax machine’s printing
process
Yield: an approximation of the number of prints expected from a print cartridge based on a standard of 4% to 6%
page coverage for each page
